Stinging Insects in Northern Utah
What Are Stinging Insects?
Northern Utah's primary stinging insects are yellow jackets, paper wasps, and bald-faced hornets. All form colonies in spring and peak in August-September when colonies reach maximum size.
Signs of Stinging Insects Activity
- Visible nest under eaves, in shrubs, or in trees
- Underground nest with high insect traffic in lawn
- Wasps entering gaps in siding or soffits (void nest)
- Increased wasp activity near food or trash
Are Stinging Insects Dangerous?
Stings cause pain and local swelling in most people. For those with allergies, a single sting can cause anaphylaxis — a life-threatening emergency. Yellow jacket underground nests are particularly dangerous because they are often disturbed accidentally.
